Job Description:

The DOT Safety Tech must have proven skill working within the field of Transportation Safety and with Frontline personnel and Heavy Duty Equipment to recognize and enforce essential safety practices throughout operational environments. Produce results through consistent and concise application of safety metrics within all areas of the Safety & Compliance Program. Incumbent must have proven knowledge of the waste transportation industry coupled with tangible on-the-ground experience working with CDL Drivers and Heavy Equipment Operators towards safe performance practices. This results-driven individual must maintain a deliberate safety focus to conduct and communicate a message of prevention while addressing safety infractions, responding to incidents and accidents, and meeting with and training personnel at all levels. Responsible for safety education, accident prevention, loss control and regulatory compliance.

    • Working in assigned company areas to ensure safe working conditions and equipment
    • Interact with frontline personnel operational management and safety team members to continually reinforce safe work practices, pointing out both the issues and encouraging positive behavior. Promote good safety culture.
    • Conduct site audits monthly and transfer stations/landfills quarterly, or as directed
    • Performs comprehensive hazard analysis and provides training and/or reinforcement of site-specific safety policies and procedures
    • Check individual SAFER reports to ensure companies are in compliance and not producing poor performance ratings
    • Analyze monthly SAFER report to ensure driver infractions are reviewed and addressed with management to determine unsafe driver/habits or equipment issues resulting from DOT inspections
    • Check and monitor driver credentials and compliance intended to ensure drivers are operating and in possession of valid license and medical card
    • Work with PSM to ensure driver MVR's are pulled and reviewed twice annually
    • Conduct Safety Training Orientation for all new employees ensuring they are properly trained in the S&C Program requirements
    • Working with management to ensure that all annual training & recertification requirements are met and conducted appropriately and effectively
    • Facilitate and ensure that all safety meetings are held monthly at designated work sites
    • Communicate regulatory compliance observations, inspections, follow up documentation and all notices of violation to management
    • With the objective of Investigating all reported injuries to access what/how/why meet and interview injured worker in support of completing the initial report committee with Manager, Employee & ICRM to document and outline RTD Workplan inclusive of medical care instructions and communication requirements
    • Manage and maintain all accident files and related disciplinary actions
    • Acts as a liaison working closely with ICRM to ensure claims are turned around in a timely manner and injured personnel are returned to duty expeditiously
    • Conduct ongoing RTD meetings & facilitate RTD practice points
    • Acts a first responder for ALL accidents or injuries; supports the emergency response team to ensure all practice points are followed and information is captured and communicated efficiently in support of mitigating risk and liability
    • Maintain active DOT Accident Register
    • Acting as lead facilitator, conducts post-accident committees in conjunction with Operational Management and all other applicable personnel
    • Coordinates and conducts routine equipment inspections both on-site and over-the-road (OTR) all DOT Levels
    • Report findings and facilitate prevention meeting with operational management personnel to include drivers, mechanics showing them identified infractions and risk
    • Audit Maintenance records to ensure required files are in order and include: Annual Inspections, DOT Inspection Reports with Repair Orders (RO) attached
    • Work w/Maintenance Managers to ensure mechanical repairs deriving from Driver VCR's are properly repaired or scheduled and that such repairs are carried out, documented and monitored for any continuing problems or issues
    • Contact/Meet with Operations Management daily to review safety updates and activities, active accident files, claims, equipment observations, inspections, WC RTD and other preventive actions and results
    • Forward daily accountability reports and updates to Director & PSM (electronically)
    • Weekly meeting w/Director and PSM in review of Loss Run's and Compliance

  • Minimum 5 years' experience working on-the-ground and within the safety & compliance field
  • Possess Key Leadership qualities and be a Leader in accident response and processing
  • Effectively communicate (written and verbal) to all levels of the organization as required
  • Ability to successfully communicate safety infractions with precise understanding and knowledge of regulations
  • Able to read, understand, and relay information relating to Driver Log Books, VCR and other daily duty reports Be able to generate reports
  • Attention to detail, ingenuity, teamwork, and passion to exceed the goals are essential to this job
  • Ability to deal with problems involving complex situations and personnel
  • Must be fit-for-duty and able to drive to multiple locations throughout his/her tour-of-duty
  • Some travel required (5%)

Skills & Knowledge:
  • Must have working knowledge of DOT rules and regulations including: Driver Qualifications; DOT/Hours of Service, Drug & Alcohol Testing; Hazardous Materials, Compliance; Equipment Standards, Inspections (all levels)
  • Must have working knowledge of the Insurance & Risk Management requirements following accident or incident
  • Working knowledge of Industry Equipment and Mechanics to include Heavy Equipment (i.e., dump trucks, roll-off trucks and containers, front end loader vehicles, Tractor Trailers)
